Genetically Altered Food- Concerned?

Several Chemical and drug companies have been altering our food. They have been changing foods in a way that doesn't happen naturally. They have been adding genes from bacteria, viruses animals and plants into corn and other vegetables. Right now approximately 20% of corn and 40% of soybeans have been genetically engineered and these companies hope to be at 100% within the next 10 years. It is estimated that over 70% of processed food (packaged food like soup, cereal and soda) contain genetically genetically altered ingredients.

Why are they doing this? The goal is to create a product that is a lower price. Crops are engineered to resist insects and viruses and supposedly these organisms that are added to the food is safe for humans.

I'm Against Genetic Engineering

I personally am against genetic engineering. I am a believer that when God created us and created food (plants and animals) he made them perfectly. I don't like the idea of messing with perfection. I think if our food supply is diminishing, we need to focus on healing our earth. Now most families recycle. Imagine if each family had a small garden and each family had a compost. We could replenish the soil. I just feel like there must be a safer answer rather than the genetic engineering of plants.

In the mean time, I will be buying organic foods and try to help educate people. I'm amazed at peoples lack of knowledge for what they eat. If you are interested in learning about what is in the food we eat and genetically modified food risks then check out some of the resources on this page.

I am new to researching what is in the food I eat and the more I learn the more horified I become. Thanks for a well written article.

Thanks for your comment Jen. It really is quite scary what they are doing to our food.

I dread to think what all these viruses and antiviruses will do to us. I also swear by organic and let's hope it is organic. Thank you for the information.

This frightens me. I know that feeding a growing world population is a concern but adding stuff to food scares the dickens out of me. And as far as the money, I would be willing to spend twice as much to keep this stuff out of what I eat.

I'm with you Hello Hello. Organic all the way! And Mulberry, I agree that I would spend more.

Hmm where to start. Wendy is a bit out of how much corn and soy is GM. Closer to 60% of corn and 80% of soy is GM in the US (none in Australia where I am). If God created food perfectly and it shouldn't be messed with then there would be nothing on the grocery shelf today. We have messed with "perfection" since agriculture began 1000's of years ago. We did so for many reasons: to increase yield, to have crops survive in new environments (your US wheat, corn, etc would do poorly in other countries and even other regions within the US), to make them edible or fit for human consumption. That is, becasue all plants contain toxins, allergens, etc to help them fight of disease and attack from insect or browsers, we selectively bred them out to make them palatable for humans. Our agricultural crops would be unable to survive outside a well-tended field (in nature) today because of this. GM is definitely a different breeding technique with different set of risks to non-GM techniques, but you could hardly call embryo rescue and mutagenesis (both non-GM breeding technologies that have been in use for decades) natural as they produce varieties that require sophisticated lab techniques and the varieties are unlikely to ever occur in nature. As for viruses: the human genome is full of ancient viral DNA that has incorporated itself into ours over the few million years of human existence. I have never heard of an anti-virus.

Thank you TechNyou for your insight. And you make a good point. Your numbers are actually a little scarier for me and you have a point that the shelves would probably be empty. I guess eventually in order to survive maybe GM is inevitable? I hope not. And I'm sure we all eat some GM food without being aware or because it is all that is available. But for me I try to read the labels on packaged food. For example Ketchup. The first ingredient is corn. Who would of thought?! I want my ketchup to have tomato in them. :) I pick up organic when I can.

Wendy, no scientist in the world is suggesting GM is essential for human survival. It can help solve certain problems faced by plant breeders, but is only one of many tools plant breeders use to develop novel crops. If you are worried about GM food then don't eat highly processed stuff as that is the only place it ends up (apart from Papaya and small amounts of squash in your part of the world). In Australia it is labelled and it is difficult to find even processed food that contains GM

I agree Jason about staying way from the highly processed foods. It is much healthier that way. (By the way, I think I want to move to Australia! :)
